Every year, the same thing happens across Gurgaon. The lights go up, the sweets arrive, and somewhere in the house a dog is shaking under the bed. Firecrackers are loud, sudden and impossible for a dog to understand. The good news is that a little planning makes a big difference. If your dog is scared of crackers, you are not alone. This guide shares simple Diwali tips for pet parents in Gurgaon (Gurugram): how to prepare your dog in the weeks before, how to calm your dog during Diwali night, and what to avoid.

โšก Quick answer

To keep your dog calm during Diwali crackers, walk them early before dark, keep them indoors in a quiet room with windows and curtains closed, play the TV or soft music to cover the noise, and stay calm and close by. Make sure they wear a collar with an ID tag in case they bolt. Never give human medicines or sedatives without your vet’s advice.

Why is my dog scared of crackers?

Dogs hear far more sharply than we do, so a cracker that sounds loud to us can feel overwhelming to them. The noise is also sudden and comes from every direction, with flashes and the smell of smoke on top. Your dog cannot tell that it is a celebration. To them, the world simply feels unsafe. This is often called firecracker anxiety or Diwali anxiety in dogs. Some dogs cope well, but many show at least a few of these signs:

๐Ÿ˜ฐ

Shaking

Trembling, heavy panting or drooling.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Hiding

Under beds, in bathrooms or behind sofas.

๐Ÿ”

Pacing

Restless, unable to settle or sleep.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Barking

Non-stop barking, whining or howling.

๐Ÿšช

Escaping

Scratching doors or trying to run out.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Not eating

Skipping meals or having accidents indoors.

How to prepare your dog for Diwali

The calmest Diwali dogs are usually the ones whose families started preparing early. Here is a simple plan you can follow from today.

2โ€“3 weeks before

Play firecracker sounds on your phone at a very low volume while your dog eats or plays. Raise the volume slowly over the days, only as long as they stay relaxed. If they get worried, go back a step.

2 weeks before

Set up a safe den in the quietest room: their bed, a blanket over a crate or table, a worn t-shirt of yours and a favourite toy. Let them use it every day so it feels like their own spot.

1 week before

Check their collar fits snugly and the ID tag has your current phone number. If your dog is very anxious, talk to your vet now, not on Diwali night, about what may help.

If you are travelling

Book boarding early. Good places fill up for Diwali weeks in advance, and a trial stay before the festival helps your dog settle.

Diwali day

Follow the night-of checklist below.

How to calm your dog during Diwali: 8 tips

1

Walk early
Finish the evening walk well before dark, on a leash, even inside your society.
2

Feed a little earlier
A full tummy before the noise starts helps many dogs feel sleepier and calmer.
3

Close it all
Shut windows, draw heavy curtains and keep balcony doors locked to reduce noise and flashes.
4

Add steady sound
The TV, a fan or soft music helps cover the sudden bangs.
5

Let them hide
If they choose the bathroom or under the bed, let them. Do not pull them out.
6

Stay calm and close
Comforting a scared dog is fine. Speak softly and keep your own mood relaxed.
7

Give them a job
A lick mat, chew or stuffed toy keeps their mind busy and helps them relax.
8

Watch the door
Guests come and go on Diwali. Keep your dog in a closed room so they cannot slip out.

What NOT to do

โœ– Do not take them near crackers
Not even “just to watch”. Sparks and smoke can hurt them, and many dogs bolt.
โœ– Do not tie them outside
A tied dog cannot escape the noise and can panic or get injured.
โœ– Do not scold fear
Shouting at a scared dog for barking or hiding only makes the fear worse.
โœ– No medicines without your vet
Never give human sleeping pills or calming tablets on your own. Ask your vet first.
โœ– Do not leave them alone
If you are going out to celebrate, make sure someone your dog knows stays with them.
โœ– Do not share festive sweets
Mithai, chocolate and fried snacks can upset your dog’s stomach or be harmful.

Diwali in Gurgaon: what pet parents should know

Cracker timings. In 2025, the Supreme Court allowed only green crackers in Delhi-NCR, and only between 6โ€“7 AM and 8โ€“10 PM on Diwali and the day before. Rules can change each year, so check the 2026 guidelines closer to the date. Either way, plan your dog’s walks and meals around the evening hours, because that is when most crackers go off.

Apartment living. In high-rise societies, sound echoes between towers and balconies face each other. A room on the inner side of your flat, away from the balcony, is usually quietest.

The air after Diwali. Gurgaon’s air quality often drops in the days after Diwali. Keep walks shorter, avoid peak smog hours and watch for coughing or tiredness.

Community dogs. Street dogs in your area have nowhere to hide. Leaving a little food and water in a quiet corner, away from where crackers are burst, is a kind thing to do.

๐Ÿ†˜ If your dog runs away

Search close to home first, as scared dogs often hide nearby. Tell your society guards straight away, post a clear photo with your number in local WhatsApp groups and pet pages, and leave something that smells of home at your door. Keep your phone on through the night.
